What makes you eco friendly? – How do you do green living?

Do you want to be greener but don't know where to begin?

Green living

A common misconception of green living is that we are all a cult of hippies. Whilst I personally love the idea of a more stereotypical green and simple life, I know that it is certainly not for everyone. That is completely fine!

Green living doesn’t have to mean living in a yurt, foraging for food and never washing your hair (all of which is fine btw).  But for me and for the vast majority of the amazing green communities of the world, we just want to live unconventionally. It’s simply about making conscious decisions about what you buy and who you buy it from, with the earth in mind. It’s about finding creative ways of being greener. It’s that simple.

Are you on a tight budget?

Living greener doesn’t have to be expensive

Don’t get me wrong, it definitely can be, but not here. Here we are trying to be thrifty & green, and you are here because you want to do the same. So, if you want to make changes to your lifestyle, however small, it all adds up.

Do you know what? Our beautiful planet will thank you for it.

From baking your own bread to growing your own vegetables, I can show you how to live greener, provide healthier food for your family, but still be kind to your wallet.

Is your house drowning in plastic?

Are you concerned about your plastic consumption and want to know what alternatives are available? Check out my product reviews for some amazing eco alternatives to your usual household essentials.

Progress NOT perfection.

None of us are eco-perfect, despite how it may seem, and small changes make such a huge difference. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. We all have to start somewhere, and guess what? Your journey has already begun, because you are here, and that in itself is amazing!

But why does any of this matter?

I went on my own little beach clean and in just 20 minutes I picked up all of this plastic.

There was so much more plastic that eventually I just had to simply stop looking or I would have never left that beach. It was truly overwhelming and devastating.

WHO GIVES A F$%K ABOUT PLASTIC WASTE?

I think by now most of us are aware of the worldwide plastic crisis, if you aren’t then here are a few home truths about plastic…

Did you know that there is currently 5.2 trillion pieces of plastic in the worlds oceans?

That is a pretty depressing fact, but it gets worse…

It takes 200 years for a plastic straw to degrade? 450 years for a plastic cup and 500 years for a disposable nappy.

"It's only one straw" - Said 8 billion people...

It is estimated that 12.7 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, amongst them are our everyday Items such as carrier bags, balloons, bottle tops, toothbrushes, flipflops, plastic cutlery, cotton buds and micro beads from beauty products. These plastics we throw away or needlessly flush down the toilet, are poisoning our oceans and killing our endangered species.

My name’s Nikki and I am an eco warrior! ♻️🌎🤘🏻 2020 UPDATE!!

When I first started Thrifty Green Life in January 2017, it was with the intention of documenting our families money saving journey. We made a plan to change our money wasting habits and find “thrifty” ways to make changes to our lifestyle. We wanted to own our home, but we had no money to be able to afford a deposit for a mortgage. Saving was our primary goal.

Over the last three years my life has completely changed, and my little blog  and our eco journey has become so much more than I ever anticipated. It’s become less about saving money (still trying to be as frugal as possible) and more about protecting our planet and the health and future of my family.

We still desperately want to own our own home but we have now realised that more importantly, we want to be self sufficient.

Global pandemic

The year 2020 was one HELL of a year for everyone, and it’s really made us realise how much we rely on society for absolutely everything. For us, it’s about feeling in control and of being more prepared in case another pandemic hits the world again.

We dream of “The Good Life” we really do! We still want to save money on unimportant things, but we also want to spend the money that is necessary to improve our lives and the health of our family and the planet, one glass bottle at a time!

I never anticipated that I would become extremely passionate about zero waste, plastic free shopping and recycling. Or that I would become a forager, a gardener and start my very own eco community. But, here I am today, from humble beginnings this little blog has changed my life and I want to thank everyone who’s coming along for the ride.

I hope this website helps provide a useful source of info and inspiration to help you change the future of our planet too (If you want to 😊)
